Choose the right protein

Seven protein powders and one question: which one should you choose? The difference lies in the raw material, how quickly the protein is absorbed, and how the powder tastes and feels. The table shows the key figures per serving. Below it, we go through when each type fits. Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass, whichever source you choose.

After training and in everyday life: Whey

GAAM Whey is a whey protein concentrate from milk with added lactase enzyme. It mixes easily, comes in several flavours and gives 24 to 26 grams of protein per serving. If you just want one protein powder that works for most things, this is where you start.

High protein content, little else: Isolate

GAAM Isolate is a whey protein isolate with 26 grams of protein per 30-gram serving and only 115 kcal. Isolate is more filtered than concentrate and therefore contains less fat, carbohydrate and lactose. Suits you if you count calories or want as much protein as possible per serving.

Light and fruity: Clear Whey

GAAM Clear Whey is whey protein isolate that mixes into a clear, juice-like drink instead of a milky shake. About 19 grams of protein and 82 kcal per serving, with no fat. Suits you when you want something light and fresh, for example after a session in the heat.

Evenings: Casein

GAAM Casein is milk protein that is absorbed slowly. That makes it a good fit for the evening or when the next meal is a long way off. 25 to 26 grams of protein per serving and added lactase enzyme.

Plant-based: Vegan Protein, Soy Isolate and Pea Protein

GAAM Vegan Protein combines pea, rice and hemp and gives 21 grams of protein per serving, with flavour. GAAM Soy Isolate has the highest protein content of the plant-based options, 24.8 grams per serving. GAAM Pea Protein is pure pea with a neutral taste and works as well in porridge and baking as in a shake. Plant proteins often have slightly less leucine than whey, so a slightly larger serving gives the same effect.

How much protein do you need?

For anyone who trains with weights regularly, the research points to 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilo of body weight per day, spread over three to five meals. A protein powder is a tool for the occasions when food is not enough, not a replacement for food. Read more in Protein and muscle growth: how much do you really need?
